Miss America tightens gender rules to ban transgender contestants who have not had a fully completed medical transition: Pageant previously allowed anyone who identified as ‘a female’ to compete

Miss America has tightened their gender rules to ban transgender contestants who have not had a fully completed medical transition for their 2024 season.

In the new Miss 2024 contract, seen by The Standard, competitors now have to identify either as ‘a born female’ or a female who has ‘fully completed sexual reassignment surgery’.

It is unclear what constitutes completing a medical transition, as many trans-identified people do not pursue any surgery as part of their transition. 

Previously the pageant had allowed anyone who simply identified as ‘a woman’ to participate. 

It also specifies that applicants must be unmarried and will not get married during the titleholder term, although this clause is not a change from years past.

One of the few transgender local titleholders is Monroe Lace, who holds the title of Miss San Francisco, and is set to compete in Miss California at the end of this month.
