Economic hardship: Niger youths seize foodstuff from food truck, Borno residents consider joining insurgents

The rising cost of living in the country assumed another dimension on Thursday with an attack on a truck carrying food items in Suleja area of Niger State.

Niger State Food Truck Attack:

 • Truck carrying food attacked in Suleja, Niger State.

  • Youths seized bags of rice and other food items, and soldiers intervened with gunfire.

Borno Protest Over Hunger:

• Also, yesterday, hundreds of residents of Dikwa town in Borno State protested and raised serious concern over hunger and their inability to feed their families, given the recent nationwide hike in prices of commodities. 

 • Threaten to join terrorists due to severe difficulties.

Nationwide Hardship Protests:

• Minna, Niger State, witnessed a protest over the high cost of food items earlier this month.

• Women blocked Minna-Bida Road expressing grievances.

• Nationwide protests continue as people struggle to afford three square meals.

Jigawa State Police Intervention:

• Meanwhile, police operatives yesterday blocked protesters from staging a peaceful demonstration against hunger, social and economic difficulties in Jigawa State.

• Police cite lack of permit and potential security issues.

• Organizers, SAWABA Initiative, claim police requested a discussion, urging them to postpone the protest.

Organizers’ Concerns and Demands:

• Organizers stress the impact of economic policies post-fuel subsidy removal.

• Call for a review of President Bola Tinubu’s economic policy.

• Demand local government financial autonomy and advocate for an increase in workers’ wages.
