ECOWAS considers suspending sanctions on Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger amid military rule

PUNCH

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is anticipated to lift sanctions imposed on Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, following military takeovers in these countries.

President Bola Tinubu, serving as the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States Chairman, hosts a crucial meeting with counterparts at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja to discuss this matter.

The bloc aims to persuade the alienated states to reconsider their decision to withdraw.

The military-led juntas of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger had announced their withdrawal in late January, citing “illegal sanctions” and foreign influences.

ECOWAS, headquartered in Abuja, is expected to emphasize unity and brotherhood in its efforts to bring the three states back into the fold.

The decision to lift sanctions comes amidst diplomatic interventions, including former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon’s involvement.

The meeting aims to address the challenges posed by the recent coups and foster unity within the ECOWAS community.
