NCC clarifies reasons for barring SIM cards previously linked to NIN

In a recent statement, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) addressed concerns regarding the barring of SIM cards that were previously linked to National Identification Numbers (NIN). According to NCC spokesperson Reuben Muoka, this action was taken due to issues with the quality of the NIN data associated with these SIM cards.

Muoka emphasized that the responsibility of using NINs to track criminal activities, such as kidnappings, lies with law enforcement agencies, particularly the police.

Explaining further, Muoka highlighted discrepancies in the information provided during the NIN-SIM card linking process, including inconsistencies in names and other personal data. He noted that some subscribers’ NINs had not been verified by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), leading to further complications.

Acknowledging subscribers’ frustrations, Muoka stated that affected individuals would need to visit their service providers’ outlets to validate their NINs and address any related issues. He also hinted at potential future solutions, expressing hope for a virtual verification process.

The NCC’s clarification comes amid numerous complaints from subscribers who had previously linked their NINs with their SIM cards. Muoka clarified that some SIM cards were barred due to discrepancies between the information on the NIN and what customers had registered with their service providers.

As the NCC works to resolve these issues, subscribers are encouraged to cooperate with their service providers and complete the necessary validation processes.
