Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized that Nigeria’s acceptance of grains from Ukraine should not be misconstrued as a sign of weakness or failure. Speaking at the Leadership Annual Conference and Award 2023 in Abuja, he pointed out that Egypt, too, relies heavily on grain imports from Ukraine without being labeled a failed state.
Addressing concerns raised by Peter Obi of the Labour Party regarding Ukraine’s food donation, Idris stressed that it’s common for countries to support each other in times of need. He highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address Nigeria’s challenges and assured that despite present difficulties, the country’s economic growth remains on track.
Idris commended the bold step of removing fuel subsidies, emphasizing its positive impact on the economy, including a significant reduction in fuel imports and increased foreign investments under President Tinubu’s leadership. He urged Nigerians to support the government’s initiatives, expressing optimism that Nigeria would overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger.
