Nigerian government launches online passport application for diaspora citizens

The Ministry of Interior has unveiled an online passport application system for Nigerians living abroad, offering a convenient and hassle-free process for passport acquisition. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed the initiative via the ministry’s official channels, urging Nigerians in the diaspora to utilize the online immigration portal for passport applications.

Gone are the days of enduring long queues and bureaucratic hurdles. With the new online platform, Nigerians abroad can initiate their passport applications from the comfort of their homes. While physical appearances are still mandatory for passport renewals, the ministry assures the public of ongoing efforts to fully automate the process, ensuring greater efficiency and eliminating inconveniences.

The launch of the online passport application system, initially slated for March 8, aims to simplify and streamline the passport application and collection process for Nigerians residing far from Nigerian missions worldwide. This move underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance citizen services and foster diaspora engagement.

In January, Nigeria introduced automated passport application services domestically, revolutionizing the application process by eliminating the need for physical interactions, queues, and paperwork. The implementation of contactless application procedures not only enhances convenience but also bolsters security measures against identity theft.

Under the new automated system, Nigerians abroad will only need to visit immigration centers for fingerprint biometrics, significantly reducing face-to-face requirements and making the application process more accessible. Furthermore, plans are underway to install additional eGates across all international airports in Nigeria, with 16 eGates set for deployment at Lagos airports by December.

The installation of eGates aims to streamline passport processing, leveraging national identification numbers to profile diasporan Nigerians entering the country. This strategic initiative reflects Nigeria’s commitment to modernizing immigration processes and enhancing border security while prioritizing the needs of its citizens both at home and abroad.
