Parties call for inquiry into alleged N3.7tn budget padding; Senator Navarro calls for Ningi’s arrest

Political parties including the All Progressive Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and others demand a comprehensive investigation into Senator Abdul Ningi’s claim of N3.7 trillion budget padding for the year 2024. Senator Ningi alleges discrepancies between the National Assembly-approved budget and the one being implemented, sparking controversy and calls for his arrest.

Senator Navarro, echoing the sentiments of several parties, calls for Ningi’s arrest, citing concerns about potential disruption of peace within the National Assembly. Ningi, however, stands by his statement, emphasizing the unaccounted N3.7 trillion in the 2024 budget during a press conference. He clarifies that he never accused President Tinubu of running two budgets but insists on the need for transparency regarding the budget allocation.

The controversy deepens as political parties, civil society organizations, and lawmakers express divergent views. While some demand a thorough investigation into Ningi’s allegations, others question the feasibility of such large-scale padding without legislative scrutiny. Northern senators, disavowing Ningi’s claims, emphasize their collective role in passing the budget and refute any notions of padding.

In response, the minority caucus of the House of Representatives launches a study group to verify Ningi’s claims, underscoring the seriousness of the issue. Opposition lawmakers advocate for transparency and accountability in budgetary processes, urging patience until a thorough review is conducted.

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim vows to pursue legal action against Ningi for alleged misinformation and potential breach of peace. He pledges to involve law enforcement agencies if the Senate fails to address the matter promptly.

As tensions escalate, the Nigerian political landscape faces a pivotal moment, balancing calls for accountability with the need for legislative integrity and transparency in budgetary allocations.
