ASUU threatens to go on strike over FG’s failure to set up governing councils

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given a two-week ultimatum to the federal government to create university governing councils in Nigeria or face a strike.

Emmanuel Osodeke, the president of the union, disclosed this as the mood of members in a press briefing held at the University of Abuja on Tuesday, according to The PUNCH.

He said that the disbandment of the governing councils by President Bola Tinubu on June 22, 2023, failed to follow due process and that not appointing new ones since then had been a concerning situation for the union.

Each university in Nigeria is supposed to have a governing council responsible for policy matters, finance and properties of the institution.

The union’s president also described the recent offer of a 35 percent salary increase for professors and a 25 percent raise for other lecturers within the university system as a wage award that can be withdrawn by the government anytime it chooses to do so.PUNCH
