Peter Obi alleges death threats following criticism of Tinubu’s government

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has alleged that he is facing threats to his life following his outspoken criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s government. Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, made the claim after Felix Morka, the national spokesperson for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accused him of “crossing the line” with his comments about the administration.

In a statement on his social media platform X, Obi responded to Morka’s remarks, which followed his New Year message to Nigerians in which he condemned the current government’s handling of corruption, economic mismanagement, and growing poverty. Obi also pointed out what he described as entrenched nepotism and a worsening debt profile under President Tinubu’s leadership.

Morka had labeled Obi’s remarks as “ridiculous” and “deceptive,” criticizing his tenure as Anambra governor and questioning his ability to move on from the loss in the 2023 election. In his response, Obi said that while he had received numerous threats, including direct threats to his life, he would not be silenced in his resolve to speak truthfully. He expressed concern that the country was increasingly moving towards an authoritarian regime where freedom of expression is being systematically suppressed.

“I ask the question: Have I really crossed the line?” Obi said in his post. “If so, I invite anyone to point it out, as I remain committed to upholding decorum. However, I will not stop speaking out, especially as Nigeria continues to veer towards undemocratic practices.” Obi also called for positive, decisive actions from the administration to address the challenges facing the country, adding that Nigeria’s future must not be compromised.

As Obi continues to speak out against what he perceives as a drift toward authoritarianism, he has expressed hopes for a more democratic and free society for Nigeria’s future generations.
