Trump calls the 2026 World Cup draw “the biggest event in sports” as Washington prepares to host the event in December.

US President Donald Trump has announced that the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held on December 5 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature 48 teams for the first time.

“It’s the biggest, probably the biggest event in sports,” Trump said during a news conference at the White House, alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who showcased the trophy.

Infantino revealed the draw will be broadcast globally to an audience of one billion. “There will be 104 matches—104 Super Bowls!” he added. The draw will split 48 teams into 12 groups of four, with top teams and best third-placed teams advancing to knockouts.
