Donald Trump is planning to honor Ben Carson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in a White House ceremony, praising Carson’s service as a former neurosurgeon and HUD secretary.
President Donald Trump announced Saturday that Dr. Ben Carson will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, with a White House ceremony planned to honor the former neurosurgeon and Cabinet member.
The announcement came at the conclusion of Trump’s remarks at the American Cornerstone Institute’s Founders’ Dinner in Mount Vernon, Virginia. “Congratulations Ben. He didn’t know this. He didn’t know it. I hope he’s happy,” Trump said.
Carson served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during Trump’s first term, after earlier running for president in 2016. He ultimately dropped out of the race and threw his support behind Trump during the primary.
Carson is also founder of the American Cornerstone Institute, an organization whose mission embraces what its website identifies as “the principles that have guided him through life, and that make this country great: Faith, Liberty, Community, and Life.”
