Man cut in half by forklift wanted to live even if he was just 'head on a plate'

A man cut in half in a horror forklift accident told his family to keep him alive even if he was just a “head on a plate”.

Construction worker Loren Schauers, 20, was working on a bridge in September 2019 when he fell 50ft and was crushed by a forklift which severed his forearm and crushed his lower body.

Loren’s family were left with the awful decision of whether to ask doctors to save him by cutting him in half and risk Loren wishing they hadn’t.

Luckily the lad from Great Falls in Montana, US, was able to eventually speak for himself and looked doctors “dead in the eye” as he opted for hemicorporectomy surgery.

Loren has been living without his legs and right forearm for the last two years with the assistance of his devoted wife Sabia Reiche, 23.

Together the couple have opened up parts of their life to supporters on Youtube where they have built a massive following of 477,000 subscribers.

In one video Sabia explained that doctors told the family the only way to save Loren was to carry out a hemicorporectomy – which would mean surgeons would amputate everything below his belly button.

She said: “We were all like super shocked and none of us knew how to react and none of us knew how Loren would react because he’s an 18 year old guy living life to the full.
