An American city once voted the ‘most miserable’ place in the country is considered so rough, you could even get a home for a dollar.
Gary, Indiana, was once an industrial powerhouse for steel production in the US, yet the city could be compared to a scrapheap these days, with the industry a shadow of its former self.
Dubbed a ‘ghost town’, the city has lost more than 40% of its population in the last 30 years, leaving more than 30% of homes vacant.
Gary was also named ‘murder capital’ of the US in the mid-90s with 129 murders reported in a single year. Now, 4.5 in every 1,000 residents will be a victim of violent crime, while nearly 30 in every 1,000 will be a victim of property crime, Neighbourhood Scout reports.
Along with high crime rates came an ocean of derelict homes, which inspired the city to offer some for as little as $1 in 2019, but only if you were responsible enough and could prove you could renovate them within a year of purchase.
