Donald Trump is “too mentally unstable” to be President and his “sociopathic” tendencies present “a profound danger for America’s democracy and safety”, a group of psychiatrists claimed.

The former President’s mental well-being has been brought to the fore in the Republican Party race to be the nominee.

Fellow candidate Nikki Haley has raised questions over whether Trump is fit for a second term in office.

She said: “We see that Biden has changed so much in two years.

“But last night, Trump is at a rally and he’s going on and on, mentioning me multiple times as to why I didn’t take security during the Capitol riots.

“Why didn’t I handle 6 January better? I wasn’t even in DC on 6 January. I wasn’t in office then.”

She added: “They’re saying he got confused, that he was talking about something else, he’s talking about Nancy Pelosi.

“The concern I have is – I’m not saying anything derogatory – but when you’re dealing with the pressures of the presidency, we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do this. We can’t.”

While Trump has always denied being mentally unwell, a controversial book released in 2017 also looked at his mental state.

The book titled ‘The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump‘ contained essays from 27 psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals who examined Trump’s characteristics.

Judith Lewis Herman of Harvard Medical School and Bandy X. Lee of the Yale School of Medicine wrote in the prologue: “Anyone as mentally unstable as Mr. Trump simply should not be entrusted with the life-and-death powers of the presidency.”

Philip Zimbardo, who ran the famous Stanford prison experiment, added that Trump is “an impulsive, immature, incompetent person who, when in the position of ultimate power, easily slides into the role of the tyrant.”

Retired Harvard psychiatry professor Lance Dodes said: “Mr. Trump’s sociopathic characteristics are undeniable.

“They create a profound danger for America’s democracy and safety. Over time these characteristics will only become worse, either because Mr Trump will succeed in gaining more power and more grandiosity with less grasp on reality, or because he will engender more criticism producing more paranoia, more lies, and more enraged destruction.”
