The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security alert ahead of planned protests by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) in Abuja and other major cities on Friday, March 28, 2025. The advisory warned of potential disruptions, including roadblocks, traffic congestion, and possible confrontations. “Based on past occurrences, protests may involve roadblocks, checkpoints, traffic congestion, and physical confrontations,” the embassy stated. Key protest locations include Bannex Plaza, Berger Junction, Unity Fountain, and the National Mosque.
The embassy urged U.S. citizens to avoid protest areas, monitor local media, and maintain emergency preparedness. “Avoid areas where protests are taking place. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests,” the alert advised. Despite the warning, the embassy confirmed that its offices in Abuja and Lagos would remain open for consular services.
The IMN, a Shiite Muslim group, has a history of staging demonstrations, some of which have turned violent. Authorities are on high alert to prevent unrest. The embassy’s advisory underscores the need for vigilance, particularly in central Abuja, where past protests have led to clashes with security forces.
