US lawmaker lobbies Tinubu for Nigerian consulate in Chicago

US Congressman Danny Davis has urged President Bola Tinubu to establish a Nigerian consulate in Chicago, Illinois, to better serve Nigerians residing in the Midwest states. In a letter dated March 17, 2025, Davis highlighted the economic and diplomatic benefits of the initiative, stating that it would enhance trade, investment, and cultural exchange between Nigeria and the United States. He emphasized that a Chicago-based consulate would provide essential consular services for Nigerians in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Iowa, reducing the need for long-distance travel.

Davis, who represents Illinois’ 7th District, expressed his full support for the initiative after discussions with the Nigeria Diaspora Initiative (NDI). He noted Nigeria’s significant influence on the African continent and its deep-rooted ties with the US, adding, “Establishing a consulate in Chicago would strengthen these bonds, enhance diplomatic relations, and create new opportunities for trade, investment, and cultural exchange.” The congressman urged the Nigerian government to prioritize the effort and pledged his assistance in making it a reality.

Speaking on behalf of the NDI and Nigerian advocates, the group’s General Coordinator, Tunji Quadri, underscored Chicago’s strategic importance due to its accessibility and thriving international trade and tourism sectors. Quadri, a US-based cybersecurity expert, stated that a consulate in the city would facilitate business relations, enhance tourism and investment opportunities, and provide Nigerians in the Midwest with essential passport, visa, and consular services. He also emphasized that improved diplomatic ties would contribute to economic growth and reduce unemployment in Nigeria.
