A volcano started erupting in southwestern Iceland near a town and spa, prompting evacuations as lava flows approached.
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
A volcanic eruption began in southwestern Iceland on April 1, 2025, near the town of Grindavik. The eruption followed an evacuation of the local community and the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Flames and smoke erupted from a fissure, while molten rock moved dangerously close to Grindavik. The town had previously been evacuated a year ago when the volcano reactivated after being dormant for 800 years.
The eruption caused sirens to blare in Grindavik, and authorities had already taken measures to secure the area, with webcams capturing the eruption’s progression.
