Why it may take DisCos 11 years, N1.4 trn to bridge 7.2 m metering gap

Nigeria’s power sector faces a prolonged metering crisis, with DisCos managing only 542,738 installations in 2024—down from 609,585 in 2023—leaving 7.2 million households without meters. NERC data shows over 53% of registered users still endure estimated billing, a system widely condemned as unfair. If the current pace persists, bridging the gap could take 11 years, costing consumers N1.4 trillion.

Funding hurdles persist despite government efforts, including a $500 million World Bank credit and N700 billion Presidential Metering Initiative. Meter prices have surged, with single-phase units now averaging N148,511, raising affordability concerns. The MAF scheme and other interventions have yet to accelerate progress, fueling frustration among consumers.

Industry observers blame inefficiencies and poor DisCo performance, urging NERC to enforce stricter compliance. “Without accountability, millions will remain at the mercy of arbitrary bills,” an energy analyst noted.
