Germany is taking no chances as it “prepares for World War Three” by developing “bunker plans” to keep its citizens safe in the event of a nuclear fallout.
According to plans, subway stations and underground car parks could turn into life-saving shelters amid increased tensions between Russia and the West. Germany in particular has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since Putin’s invasion by continuously donating to its war efforts. Now, the country is looking to strengthen its own domestic defence, with officials creating an extensive database of all available bunkers and shelters, which will also include state buildings and private properties.
The Guardian reports that users will be able to have access to the directory through the use of a mobile phone app.
A ministry spokesperson also said that people will be encouraged to build their own shelters at home using basements and garages, but didn’t give a timetable as to when the app would roll out due to the time it would take for such a large project to come together.
The initiative involves the Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, as well as other authorities.
In the past, Germany had roughly 2,000 operational bunkers during past conflicts but there are only 579 left. That isn’t helpful, given the country has a population of 84 million people and the current shelters can only hold 480,000 people.
