“We view this (planned) action as irresponsible and evidence of desperation by the NLC,” said LP Secretary Umar Ibrahim.
Security presence was heightened at the Labour Party headquarters in Abuja on Sunday following claims of a planned invasion by the Nigeria Labour Congress and a caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman.
LP National Secretary, Umar Ibrahim, alleged that the group intended to forcefully take over the secretariat, claiming, “We view this (planned) action as irresponsible and evidence of desperation by the NLC.”
The deployment of two police vans and multiple officers was observed, reportedly to deter any breach of peace after Friday’s Supreme Court judgment.
LP insists the ruling affirmed internal party mechanisms but did not empower NLC to unseat Julius Abure.
“There is a leadership in place… Abure still remains the National Chairman,” Ibrahim added.
But Usman’s spokesman, Tony Akeni, dismissed the fears, saying, “The guilty are afraid and they flee when no man is pursuing them.”
He insisted Abure’s tenure had ended, referencing the court’s ruling that removed judicial oversight in party leadership disputes.
Efforts to reach NLC’s acting chair were unsuccessful.
