SAHARA REPORTERS
Supporters claim the boy is innocent and is suffering from the public perception that he was entitled after receiving financial gifts during the 2023 election season
A teenager who gained prominence during the 2023 presidential campaign by standing in front of Peter Obi’s convoy is currently detained in Lagos’s Kirikiri Prison. The incident occurred when the boy, identified as Yusuf Alami, stood before Obi’s moving vehicle during a rally at Lagos’s Tafawa Balewa Square. Alami expressed his admiration for Obi, stating, “I like am well, well, cause he (Obi) dey help people.”
Recently, reports emerged that Alami was arrested on allegations of theft and public fighting. However, supporters argue that these accusations are unfounded, attributing his detention to misconceptions stemming from his viral moment during the election. Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has called for Alami’s immediate release, highlighting his apparent innocence. Sowore remarked, “Given the boy’s apparent innocence, immediate rescue efforts are necessary to remove him from prison.”
As legal proceedings continue, the case has sparked discussions about the challenges faced by individuals who gain sudden public attention and the potential repercussions on their lives.
