In addition to the financial claim, Akpoti-Uduaghan is demanding a public apology from Nwaebonyi and an injunction to prevent any further defamatory comments.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has initiated a N5 billion defamation lawsuit against fellow Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi. The legal action, filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, stems from alleged derogatory comments made by Nwaebonyi during media interviews in March 2025.

In these appearances, Nwaebonyi purportedly referred to Akpoti-Uduaghan as a “gold digger,” “habitual liar,” and “habitual blackmailer.” Additionally, remarks concerning the nature of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s marriage and unfounded allegations of sexual harassment were reportedly made.

The lawsuit seeks financial compensation of N5 billion in damages, a public apology, and an injunction to prevent further defamatory statements. The court has mandated that Nwaebonyi respond to the suit within 21 days.

This legal development highlights the escalating tensions within Nigeria’s Senate and underscores the potential consequences of public statements on legislators’ reputations.
