The European Union has announced a 90-day suspension of planned countermeasures against the United States after President Donald Trump delayed imposing new tariffs on EU goods.

The decision, revealed on Thursday, aims to de-escalate growing transatlantic trade tensions and provide room for further negotiations. “We welcome this decision, which gives us a window to negotiate,” an EU official stated.

Trump had previously threatened tariffs on a range of European exports, prompting the EU to prepare retaliatory measures. However, both sides have since expressed openness to dialogue. The European Commission said it hopes the pause will lead to “constructive engagement” on broader trade disputes. Analysts view the 90-day reprieve as a strategic move by both parties to avoid immediate economic fallout.

While no formal agreement has yet been reached, talks are expected to continue over the coming weeks. EU leaders emphasized the importance of resolving issues through cooperation rather than confrontation, stressing a preference for “fair and balanced trade.”
