Between 2017 and September 2024, a total of 14,815 Nigerian-trained nurses and midwives were licensed to practice in the United Kingdom, according to data from the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). This substantial migration of healthcare professionals has raised concerns about the impact on Nigeria’s healthcare system.
The NMC’s register, as of March 31, 2024, included 13,656 nurses and midwives educated in Nigeria. In the subsequent six months, this number increased by 1,159, reaching a total of 14,815 by September 30, 2024. This represents an 8.5% increase within that half-year period.
The trend highlights Nigeria’s significant contribution to the UK’s nursing workforce. However, it also underscores the challenges faced by Nigeria’s healthcare sector, including concerns about the impact of such migration on the country’s health services.
