The federal government has announced stricter penalties for foreign nationals who overstay their visas in Nigeria. According to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), overstayers will now face a daily fine of $15 and a possible 10-year entry ban. This measure, the NIS said, is part of ongoing efforts to enforce visa regulations and maintain national security.

In a statement signed by Kenneth Kure, Comptroller of Immigration (Visa and Residency), the service said, “Foreign nationals who overstay their visa duration in Nigeria shall henceforth be liable to pay a fine of $15 per day and risk deportation and a ban from entering Nigeria for 10 years.”

The new policy applies to all categories of visa holders, including tourists, business travelers, and expatriates. Authorities say the move aims to curb abuse of Nigeria’s immigration system and ensure compliance with legal stay requirements.
