“The body language of the former president clearly shows that his spirit is no longer with the APC.”
As the 2027 general election approaches, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition figures are locked in a silent battle for former President Muhammadu Buhari’s support.
APC governors and party leaders visited Buhari in Kaduna to reaffirm party unity and counter growing speculation that he is drifting towards the opposition. A source told Sunday PUNCH that Buhari’s “body language” has raised concern within the APC, especially as northern loyalists show growing discontent with President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In response, opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai, also visited Buhari during Sallah, sparking talks of coalition-building.
“The visit is to poach Buhari’s loyalists from the APC bloc,” an insider revealed.
Despite assurances from APC Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, analysts say Buhari’s political influence, especially in the North, remains a key factor.
Mohammed Lawal, a Buhari associate, warned, “There is a limit to what he can do. If 90% of his loyalists leave, what choice does he have?”
