Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has criticized the Tinubu administration over the alleged ban on a new song by veteran rapper Eedris Abdulkareem, titled Jaga Jaga Reloaded. Speaking at a public event, Soyinka condemned the move as an infringement on artistic freedom and freedom of expression.
“Tell your papa, this country belongs to all of us,” Soyinka said, addressing government officials indirectly. He emphasized that music and art have historically played a crucial role in critiquing and shaping society, warning that any attempt to silence dissent would backfire.
The song in question reportedly criticizes Nigeria’s current economic and political situation, echoing sentiments from Abdulkareem’s original Jaga Jaga track released in 2004. That version also drew government backlash at the time.
