Balmer faces multiple charges, including attempted homicide and terrorism, after allegedly using homemade Molotov cocktails.
A Pennsylvania judge denied bail to Cody Balmer, 38, accused of setting fire to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s residence early Sunday, citing the safety of both Balmer and the community. Balmer, who did not enter a plea, faces charges including attempted homicide, aggravated arson, and terrorism. Authorities say he scaled a fence, broke into the governor’s Harrisburg residence, and ignited a fire using homemade Molotov cocktails while the Shapiro family slept.
Court documents allege Balmer admitted to “harboring hatred” for Shapiro and claimed he would have assaulted the governor if they had crossed paths. Shapiro, his family, and guests evacuated safely with no injuries.
Balmer later surrendered but remains hospitalized due to an unrelated medical issue. His attorney, Colton Whitener, said Balmer hasn’t been arraigned and declined further comment. Investigators suspect mental health factors.
“This type of violence is not OK,” Shapiro said. “We have to be better than this.”
