Barcelona booked their place in the Champions League semi-finals despite falling to a 3-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.
Barcelona advanced to the Champions League semi-finals with a 5-3 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund, despite a 3-1 defeat on the night at Signal Iduna Park. Hansi Flick’s men entered Tuesday’s clash with a commanding 4-0 lead from the first leg but were made to sweat as Serhou Guirassy struck a hat-trick for the hosts.
Guirassy opened the scoring in the 11th minute from the penalty spot after Pascal Gross was brought down by Wojciech Szczesny. The home crowd roared as Dortmund pushed forward, but a second goal was chalked off for offside. The visitors struggled to contain Dortmund’s relentless energy, with Maximilian Beier and Karim Adeyemi wasting good chances before the break.
Just after half-time, Guirassy headed in his second to further close the gap. However, Barcelona were handed a lifeline when Ramy Bensebaini inadvertently turned Fermin Lopez’s cross into his own net, briefly restoring a three-goal cushion. Guirassy completed his hat-trick following a poor clearance by Ronald Araujo, but the Germans couldn’t find another goal.
“We knew it would be tough, and it was,” said Flick. Barcelona now await the winner of Inter vs Bayern Munich, though their defensive frailties could be a concern going forward.
