Nwobodo disputes Bonfrère’s claims over missing Atlanta ’96 medal, land
Former Sports Minister Jim Nwobodo has rejected Johannes Bonfrère’s claims that he was denied promised rewards after leading Nigeria to Olympic football gold at Atlanta ’96. Speaking to The PUNCH, Nwobodo said the government fulfilled its commitment by allocating land to members of the victorious team, including the Dutch coach. He also said Bonfrère never complained about his reward or missing medal during his tenure. Bonfrère, however, maintained that he repeatedly contacted government officials without receiving assistance. Former defender Taribo West previously claimed the coach’s Lekki land allocation was hijacked, adding another dimension to the dispute three decades after Nigeria’s historic triumph.
