Bill Gates sounds alarm on unregulated AI benefiting only the wealthy

Billionaire Bill Gates has urged world leaders to act to ensure artificial intelligence does not worsen global inequality, as the Gates Foundation published its annual Goalkeepers Report on Tuesday, pledging $1 billion to expand AI access, according to a report by Forbes.

Gates said AI could be a “great equalizer—or widen the gap,” warning that if left to the market, “AI will be designed by and for the richest people in the world.” He argued decisions made in the “next 12 to 18 months” will determine whether the technology benefits those who already have the most.

The Gates Foundation plans to spend $1 billion over two years on AI access, with 40% supporting education, 40% healthcare, 10% agriculture, and 10% digital infrastructure. The report also calls for AI tools in every language and greater community control over data.

Gates, who recently warned AI risks are “real,” said jobs at entry- and mid-level face the greatest threat.
