‘Breakbone fever’ surges worldwide as mosquitoes spread to new territories

Dengue fever, nicknamed “breakbone fever,” is surging worldwide as disease-carrying mosquitoes expand into new territories, according to The Independent. Hillsborough County, Florida, has recorded 95 dengue cases since July 2026, including a suspected death under investigation.

The virus spreads through Aedes mosquito bites and causes high fever, severe headaches and joint pain; about 1 in 20 patients develop life-threatening complications. The World Health Organization recorded over 14 million cases globally in 2024, a 2,600% rise since 2000. Florida carries the highest domestic risk among US states, with Miami-Dade logging over 300 locally acquired infections since 2010, though most American cases originate from travel abroad.
