Petrol at ₦1,430/litre: NLC demands palliatives, wage relief for workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress has urged the Federal Government to introduce emergency measures, including wage awards for workers, as petrol prices rise to about ₦1,430 per litre, according to Punch Newspapers.

In a statement titled “Save the Situation Now,” NLC President Joe Ajaero said the increase, linked to renewed conflict in the Gulf, threatens to worsen economic hardship by driving up transportation, food and rent costs. The union called for sufficient naira-based crude sales to local refineries and expanded national petroleum storage capacity.

Ajaero noted Nigeria’s benefit from elevated crude prices, arguing the windfall should fund citizen protections, and criticized local refineries for importing crude despite domestic refining capacity development efforts.
