Tuchel sends strong warning to Alexander-Arnold and Palmer after England recall

England manager Thomas Tuchel has recalled Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer to his latest squad but warned both players they must perform to keep their places in the team. The pair were controversially left out of England’s 2026 World Cup squad but return for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czech Republic and Croatia.

According to BBC Sport, Tuchel said “the door is always open” but stressed that selection alone does not guarantee a place in his starting XI. Alexander-Arnold, who has made five appearances for Real Madrid this season, returns as a right-back despite recently featuring in midfield for the Spanish giants.

Palmer has also impressed for Chelsea, recording four goals and two assists in six matches this campaign. Tuchel said both players now have an opportunity to prove themselves during the international window. “It is another thing to perform for England,” he said, specifically challenging Palmer to reproduce his club form and Alexander-Arnold to fight for his position.

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden remains absent, while several World Cup players, including Jordan Henderson, Reece James, Djed Spence and John Stones, miss out through injury. Tuchel also admitted England may need to embrace a more attacking and unpredictable style after their World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina.

The manager said the team should place greater emphasis on their strengths and allow “a little bit more chaos” to bring out their best. England begin their Nations League campaign against Spain at Wembley on 26 September.
