Niger miners’ deaths: Tinubu orders investigation, prosecution of culpable officials

President Bola Tinubu has ordered a full investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Minna, Niger State.

According to LEADERSHIP, Tinubu said no Nigerian should die in government custody because of negligence, abuse, inhumane treatment or dereliction of duty.

The president directed investigators to examine the arrests, detention conditions, number of detainees, medical care provided and circumstances leading to the deaths.

Tinubu said any official found to have contributed to the deaths through action, abuse or negligence must be arrested and prosecuted.

He also ordered the Ministry of Interior and NSCDC leadership to cooperate with investigators and prevent interference.

Tinubu extended condolences to the victims’ families and appealed for calm.
