15 arrested over ‘monkey tail’ alcohol linked to 48 deaths in Ondo

Fifteen people have been arrested in Nigeria over the production and sale of a locally made alcoholic mixture linked to at least 48 deaths in Ondo State.

According to Sweden Herald, the substance, locally known as “monkey tail,” has also sickened 182 people across three districts in the southwestern state.

Authorities reportedly found high levels of toxic methanol in the alcohol mixture, raising concerns over its safety and production.

The outbreak has also caused severe health complications, with five victims reportedly losing their sight completely and two others suffering partial blindness.

The first cases were recorded earlier in September, while the death toll has continued to rise, according to Nigeria’s Food and Drug Administration.

Authorities have arrested 15 suspects as investigations continue into the production and distribution of the contaminated drink.
