Obi denies writing letter to Obi of Onitsha, calls it forgery

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has disowned a purported letter circulating on social media in his name, allegedly addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, Tribune Online reports.

In a statement, Obi described the document, which touched on political and financial matters in Anambra State, as “entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public.”

He further rejected the signature on the letter, insisting it had been forged, and urged the public and media to disregard the “spurious publication.”

The former Anambra State governor added that his attention remained focused on “issues of national development, accountability, and building a better future for our people – never on cheap fabrications.”

The disclaimer comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, with political actors increasingly weaponising forged statements and social media fabrications to sway public opinion — a trend Obi’s team will likely need to keep guarding against as the race intensifies.
