Indian court rejects bail for Nigerian accused in compatriot’s murder

A Pune court in India has rejected the bail application of a 48-year-old Nigerian national accused of killing a compatriot during an altercation in the city in January, The Guardian Nigeria reports.

Additional Sessions Judge S D Kulkarni dismissed Nnsemeka Maduabuchi Onyia’s application on Tuesday, citing sufficient material linking him to the offence and concerns he could flee the country if released.

Onyia was named in the first information report as one of the alleged aggressors, with witnesses reportedly telling investigators he took a sharp weapon from the kitchen and attacked victim Yemeka Kristian, 40, on vital parts of his body during a dispute over a romantic relationship involving a Nigerian woman.

Kristian later died while receiving treatment at Ruby Hall Clinic, with medical records showing multiple chop wounds.

Police have since charged three Nigerian nationals in the case, with one suspect still at large, leaving Onyia in custody as the trial proceeds.
