Brentford star Michael Kayode reveals why he rejected Nigeria for Italy

Brentford defender Michael Kayode has revealed why he turned down an approach from Nigeria after receiving his first senior Italy call-up.Speaking to the official Italian Football Federation website, Kayode said representing Italy is an honour and explained that he was delighted to join Roberto Mancini’s squad.

The 21-year-old, who came through Fiorentina’s academy and won the 2023 European Under-19 Championship with Italy, said he discovered his call-up shortly before Brentford’s match against Chelsea. Kayode also revealed that Paolo Maldini has always been his football idol, while praising Italy captain Gianluigi Donnarumma and teammate Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

The full-back also reflected on his difficult route to the Premier League, saying his move from Juventus to lower-league side Gozzano helped give him the strength to reach the top level. He urged young players not to lose confidence after dropping into the lower divisions.
