Anambra: Amid flood disaster, Soludo govt spends ₦135m on ‘flood control’ in six months despite ₦5bn budget

The Anambra State Government spent only ₦135 million on erosion and flood control between January and June 2026, representing 2.7 per cent of the ₦5 billion budgeted for the intervention, official budget performance documents show.

The development comes amid renewed flooding in the state, with heavy rainfall on Tuesday causing flooding around Ring Road, Agu Awka. Six children were rescued and taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, while one person was reported missing. NEMA and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency coordinated the rescue operations.

According to SaharaReporters, the state had ₦4.865 billion of its flood and erosion control allocation unspent by the end of June. The low utilisation has raised concerns about the pace of preventive measures as residents face risks from heavy rainfall, poor drainage and rising River Niger levels.

Earlier in September, NEMA warned riverine communities in Anambra to prepare for possible flooding as water levels in the River Niger continued to rise.
