Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has converted to Islam after reciting the Shahada in Qatar, according to Soccernet.ng. A video circulating on social media shows the 33-year-old Nigerian defender reciting the Islamic declaration of faith in Arabic in Doha, where he currently plays for Qatar Stars League club Al-Ahli.

Qatari outlet Al-Arab reported that Troost-Ekong declared his conversion while in Qatar, although no details were provided about when he began exploring Islam or what influenced his decision. Troost-Ekong has earned 83 Nigeria caps, scoring eight goals, and captained the Super Eagles to the 2023 AFCON final before retiring internationally in 2025.
