Naming ceremony turns bloody as police shoot 11-year-old, man

An 11-year-old girl, Mistura Murtala, and an elderly man, Sodiq Aremu, have reportedly been shot by police officers during a naming ceremony in Orile Iganmu, Lagos.

SaharaReporters reports that the incident occurred on September 23, 2026, around Ekunjinmi/Wewe Street, after police officers allegedly arrived to stop the gathering and activities of the DJ.

According to the Movement for the Transformation of Nigeria (MOTION), Apapa Coordinating Structure, firearms were discharged during the ensuing confrontation, injuring both residents.

Mistura was reportedly shot in the leg and taken to a hospital in Orile Iganmu, while Aremu was allegedly shot in the neck and advised to undergo emergency surgery estimated to cost about ₦500,000.

MOTION called for an immediate, independent investigation, including identification of the officers involved and preservation of medical records, videos and witness accounts.

“The issue before the public is not whether the police have legitimate security responsibilities. The issue is how those powers were exercised on the night of 23 September 2026 and why an 11-year-old child and an elderly resident ended up with gunshot injuries,” the group said.
