New York, New Jersey declare state of emergencies over looming nor’easter

New York and New Jersey have declared states of emergency in several counties as a powerful nor’easter threatens the region with coastal flooding, strong winds and possible power outages this weekend.

According to The Hill, New York Governor Kathy Hochul placed Nassau, Suffolk, New York City and Westchester under emergency measures, while New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill declared emergencies in eight counties.

Officials in Manasquan, New Jersey, also recommended voluntary evacuation for residents in low-lying areas, particularly elderly people and those with special needs.

The National Weather Service warned of moderate to locally major coastal flooding, while wind gusts reached 52 mph on Long Island.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to prepare and follow safety guidance closely.
