Got high blood pressure? Classical music may help bring it down
Listening to classical music by Mozart and Bach could help lower blood pressure more quickly in patients with severe hypertension, new research suggests.
According to The Telegraph, researchers in Turkey studied 130 hospital patients experiencing hypertensive urgency, with all participants receiving standard blood pressure medication.
Half also wore virtual reality headsets showing tranquil rivers and forests while listening to music by Mozart, Bach, Debussy, Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky.
Within 15 minutes, their blood pressure fell 4-5mmHg more than among patients receiving medication alone.
However, the difference largely disappeared after an hour.
Researchers stressed that classical music and virtual reality should complement prescribed medication, not replace it, but could help patients achieve faster early stabilisation during emergency treatment in hospitals.
