Border demarcation between Nigeria, Cameroon to end in three months — NBC

Nearly 24 years after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivered its judgement on the Cameroon-Nigeria land and maritime boundary dispute, both countries are nearing completion of the physical demarcation of their borders, according to a Peoples Gazette report.

Director-General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), Adamu Adaji, disclosed this in an interview with journalists on Sunday in Abuja.

He said the remaining demarcation, involving more than 260 boundary pillars, is concentrated in the Adamawa sector. “We are currently placing pillars to make the boundary visible in those sectors… Hopefully, before the end of the year, we should be done with the demarcation,” he said.

Adaji noted that the 2,100-kilometre Nigeria-Cameroon boundary is Nigeria’s longest international land border. He cited Koja as a Nigerian community initially placed mostly in Cameroon, saying an understanding between both countries allowed the entire community to remain in Nigeria, while other areas were conceded.

“It is not simply about defining a boundary; it is also about taking the interests of affected communities into account,” he said.
