Police Inspector Mercy Bassey killed on Third Mainland Bridge during President Tinubu’s return
LAGOS, Nigeria — A female police officer, Inspector Mercy Bassey, has died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos while performing route-lining duty ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s arrival in the state.
The incident occurred around 2:25 p.m. near the Adekunle Intersection. Inspector Bassey, attached to the Ikotun Divisional Police Station, was helping secure the transit corridor for the presidential movement when she was hit by a black Toyota Highlander SUV. According to witnesses and security reports, the driver failed to stop and accelerated away from the scene.
Police personnel gave chase, but the vehicle managed to escape into Lagos traffic. Inspector Bassey was rushed to the General Hospital in Ebute Metta, where she succumbed to her injuries while awaiting treatment.
The Motor Traffic Division of the Lagos State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the hit-and-run. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from Control 5 at Adekunle to track the fleeing vehicle and identify its driver.
