Nigeria launches digital postcode system for businesses, emergency response nationwide
The federal government has launched a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System designed to improve location identification, business operations and emergency services across Nigeria.
TheCable reported that the Nigerian Postal Service introduced the system, which assigns an 11-character digital postcode to addressable buildings nationwide.
Communications Minister Bosun Tijani said the initiative would help businesses reach customers and enable emergency responders and government agencies to locate communities.
“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” Tijani said.
Unlike the existing postcode structure covering broader geographical areas, the GIS-enabled system identifies individual buildings, narrowing locations from states or the Federal Capital Territory to local government areas, districts and buildings.
“As we work towards President Bola Tinubu ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper,” Tijani added.
Nigerians can obtain their digital postcodes through postcode.gov.ng and use them alongside existing street addresses.
