Federal, state, local government workers declare three-day warning strike over economic hardship
Public sector workers across Nigeria will begin a three-day warning strike from October 2 over the federal government’s failure to address demands on fuel prices, wages and economic hardship.
Vanguard reported that the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council directed federal, state and local government employees, including workers in ministries, departments and agencies, to join the action.
“The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating,” the council said.
The JNPSNC is demanding a reduction in petrol price to N500 per litre, a wage award and the establishment of a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage for 2027.
The council said President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day address failed to provide the measures it requested.
“In view of this failure to address these pressing concerns, our three-day warning strike will proceed as planned,” a JNPSNC leader said.
The strike is scheduled to run from midnight Friday, October 2, until Sunday, October 4, with union officials directed to ensure nationwide compliance.
