Tony Adams reveals how Sir Alex Ferguson nearly lured him from Arsenal
Arsenal legend Tony Adams has revealed how close he came to joining Manchester United after receiving a call from Sir Alex Ferguson in 1996. Speaking to FourFourTwo, Adams said he was prepared to leave Arsenal during a turbulent period following George Graham’s dismissal and Bruce Rioch’s departure.
The former defender recalled telling chairman Peter Hill-Wood, “I’m gone,” after Ferguson urged him to move to Old Trafford. However, Arsenal convinced their captain to stay, with Adams revealing his wages were trebled before Arsene Wenger’s arrival changed the club’s fortunes. Adams ultimately remained a one-club man, winning more trophies and retiring as an Arsenal legend.
