Tragedy struck at the weekend in Ayeka community, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, when a high chief was shot dead during funeral rites for a deceased colleague.

According to Daily Post, the victim was among chiefs conducting the traditional ceremony when a firearm was accidentally discharged, hitting him in the head. He reportedly died instantly.

Eyewitnesses said panic broke out as the ceremony was abruptly halted following the gunshot. Sources said the shooting may have occurred after celebrants discharged firearms into the air as part of customary festivities.

The identities of the victim and the deceased chief being buried could not be immediately confirmed as of press time.

One source attributed the incident to an accidental discharge caused by what he described as reckless handling of the firearm.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident, saying one person had been arrested.

Jimoh added that investigation had commenced, assuring that further details would be provided in due course.
